Our day started at 6:30 once again. First stop Pazin, where we saw the Pazin chasm and had our cappuccinos by the castle. Next We went to motovun, a beautiful walled city on a hill top overlooking rolling patchwork hills and vineyards under a bright blue sky. Also fortified by the venetians (like most places in Istria), Motovun is surrounded by thick stone walls and has a st mark-esque tower in the center. We walked around the walls until the shops opened at 10, and let us taste their truffle products. Ate some amazing cheese, prosciutto (another istrian specialty), bread and delectable olives and olive oil for lunch. Afterwards we explored and found many more wineries along the road. We had a map and some recommendations of vineyards to go to, so we just set out and wound up driving way down rural dirt roads up to people's houses and knocking on their doors asking awkwardly "vino?" and they would just nod and laugh and lead us to their barrels of wine and fill up glasses for us to taste straight from the spigot. Every place we stopped was amazing and very friendly and a lot less people spoke English, which was fun. Twice the wine sellers yelled for their kids to come translate for them. Most people here speak Italian and German, since there are tons of German tourists. So we found ourselves speaking to them in a fluent italien-german-russian-spanish-english mix----its funny how easy it is to have a conversation even when you are speaking different languages.
We also found the source of the truffle products we have been tasting - some guys house we drove right up to and he showed us his truffle stash. My god do we now have some truffles! Prepare for some deliciousness when we get home!
Now we are sitting at a camp ground on the island of krk, drinking a bottle of wine and watching the sunset after going for leisurely swim in the Adriatic.

wow....you just knock on their doors and they offer you wine and truffles? You do pay them, right? This is pretty unique traveling!
ReplyDeleteBetter make sure that customs isn't going to take your truffles away!
